Lucknow: Inches towards 2022 UP Assembly poll, the Uttar Pradesh Congress finalize to take out ‘padyatras’ in all the 403 Assembly constituencies of the state between November 14 and 24 in an effort to urge people to vote out the BJP in order to control inflation. Another, in fresh attempt to woo the Nishad-OBC community, the ruling BJP in Uttar Pradesh had scheduled to organize ‘Kamal Nauka Yatra’ ahead of the 2022 state Assembly elections, via river-yatras, UP BJP plans to connect with the riverine community comprising 22 influential sub-castes like Nishads and Kashyaps among OBC.

Explaining about Congress-paadyatras; a total of 403 ‘padyatras’ titled “Mehngai hatao pratigya padyatra” will be taken out from November 14, the birth anniversary of first Prime Minister late Jawahar Lal Nehru. Every yatra will pass through at least seven villages or wards and cover a distance of at least 10 km in every Assembly constituency every day. The party proposes to cover total distance of 32,240 km and hold 24,180 village level and 5,000 roadside public meetings during the period, in issued statement, the UP Congress said.

Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Ajay Kumar Lallu said that directives had been sent to all district city presidents of the party and asked them to fix responsibility of party leaders to make the ‘yatra’ successful in their respective districts/cities in the state. Senior party leaders will address a roadside public meeting at local markets at the end of the day’s ‘yatra’. Partymen would distribute the Congress promises and detail out the prevailing situation on the front of rising inflation.

Five BJP river yatras, named as ‘Kamal Nauka Yatra’, have members of fishermen and boatmen communities travelling by the BJP boats, talking about the Yogi’s government initiatives for the community that is politically dominant along the banks of the Ganga and the Yamuna in Uttar Pradesh. The Nishad-Mallah-Kevat community is spread across the state from West starts Saharanpur, Bundelkhand, Purvanchal from Jaunpur to Gorakhpur and from Varanasi to Ballia. In the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra was the first to launch a river journey to connect with the riverine community.

Of the BJP’s five river yatras, one each in Prayagraj and Kanpur across the Ganga ghats mentioned and three more have been planned; Kachla ghat in Kasganj-Badaun, the Ganga in Varanasi and in Garh Mukteshwar in western Uttar Pradesh. According to state BJP General Secretary Ashwini Tyagi; these yatras are to connect with the community that earns its living from the rivers. Over the years, the BJP government has launched several initiatives for this community and naturally, the idea is to make the community aware of these steps. Before the river journeys, boats and rivers are worshipped and speeches made with party flags fluttering in the background.

The BJP had a political and poll alliance with the Nishad Party, its chief Sanjay Nishad was recently made a member of the Vidhan Parishad. Sanjay Nishad’s son Pravin Kumar Nishad is currently a Lok Sabha MP from Sant Kabir Nagar on a BJP ticket. However, Sanjay Nishad is seen as an unpredictable leader who switches his stand and sides from time to time, so, the BJP is taking no chances and is reaching out directly to the OBC’s Nishad community.
